Sara Rickard has recently been appointed by the Arts Council of England as the Arts Co-ordinator to work with the Bristol Education Action Zone as part of a new partnership between the organisations.
Bristol and Corby in Northamptonshire have been selected because they represent two contrasting examples of the interface between formal education and arts organisations. Both EAZs present an opportunity to contextualise arts education practice within schools that intend to place the arts at the heart of the learning and development processes.
The Arts Education Interface is a major research initiative which will evaluate the impact of the arts on young people; build on good models of practice; develop the argument for long-term, sustainable arts education opportunities for young people; and contribute to local, regional and international understanding both of arts education and of the relationship between the arts and formal education sectors.
The Zone Co-ordinator aims to develop and deliver inspirational inter-curriculum arts learning opportunities which build on the learning and development needs of young people. The professional development needs of teachers and artist facilitators will be addressed. Equally, organisational and institutional learning will be facilitated by similar strategies and supported through change management training opportunities.
