Dance Live! Bristol is a creative response to the Bristol City Council / South West Arts Dance Review 2000. The review identified the wealth of dance in Bristol and beyond but also identified the need to raise the profile of dance within the city and the surrounding areas of South Gloucestershire and B&NES. The review also identified the need to create accessible information for members of the public, practitioners ad those within the education sector.
South West Arts Marketing and Bristol Area Dance Agency are working together to raise the profile of Bristol and its surrounds as a centre of excellence in dance through an audience development initiative which will culminate with a month long, city wide celebration of dance in September 2002.
The festival will draw on and celebrate the wealth of talent in dance within Bristol's culturally diverse communtiy, inviting members of the public from the widest possible communities, both resident and tourists, to become involved through taster sessions of dance forms and by attending workshops and performances across the City. It is hoped that performances will range from those of professional tourig companies to local community groups in locations which are both traditional and unusual.
Prior to the festival there will be a promotional campaign in order to build up public awareness of dance on offer within the City. The campaign will include posters which will be sited around the City in July / August 2002, a printed listings sheet and also the development of a website as a source of educational information and as a listings tool for dance providers within the City.
The festival itself will be publicised by a dedcated brochure detailing the month of events. Intensive research for and evaluation of the initiative will take place throughout to build a picture of provision and attendance / participation within dance activity. It is hoped that the intelligence will facilitate a sustainable dance economy in Bristol and its surrounds.
